  • Do I have to contact faculty members in advance in order to ask if he or she will supervise me or can I just list whoever seems appropriate?

    Please just list with whom you would like to work. The final decision on the supervisor and the team of mentors will be based upon the interview in April.

  • How can I find out which faculty member fits as potential mentor/supervisor?

    Please take a look at the homepages of the professors to find more detailed information on their research projects and publications. You’ll find the names of the faculty members and the links to their websites listed under Faculty.

  • I have earned my degree in another discipline than those represented at the John F. Kennedy Institute. Am I still eligible to apply?

    In exceptional cases, degrees of disciplines related to the ones represented at the JFKI will be accepted. However, it is important that your dissertation project matches with the research areas of the graduate school.

  • I have studied at an American (or Canadian, British..) university but did not receive my degree there. Do I have to take the TOEFL/CAE/ IELTS anyway?

    All applicants who are neither native English speakers nor have earned a degree at a university with English as language of instruction are required to submit certification of their English proficiency with TOEFL, CAE or IELTS scores.

  • I worked in an English speaking country for a longer time. Is my certificate of employment sufficient as proof of my English language skills?

    A work stay in an English speaking country does not suffice as proof of language skills.

  • The results of my TOEFL test will not be issued until January, 31. Is there any possibility to hand in the results after the official application deadline?

    Results of the TOEFL (CAE or IELTS) exam can be handed in after the application deadline, but should not arrive later than April, 1. If you are not able to submit the certificate of your English proficiency until January, 31, please note on your application form under ‘additional remarks’ the approximate date when to expect the results of your TOEFL/ CAE / IELTS.
